American Jobs – Disappearing At An Alarming Rate

The $787 billion economic stimulus package signed by Barack Obama on February 17, 2009,  is intended to create or save an estimated 3.5 million to 4 million jobs over the next few years.

We’ll need the employment boost from the stimulus plan…and more.

Bloody Monday Job Losses
Monday, January 26, 2009 will forever be known as “Bloody Monday,” the day when seven American companies announced significant job cuts. Those companies (Caterpillar, Pfizer, Sprint Nextel, Home Depot, Texas Instruments, ING, and Deere & Co.) collectively cut 64,500 jobs.

Total Number Of Jobs Losses During The Recession
By March 1, 2009, American companies had cut a total of 4.4 million jobs since the “official start” of the recession in December 2007.

By April 1, 2009, an estimated 5.1 million jobs had been lost,and economists were predicting that another 2.1 million would be shed in the upcoming year.

Total Number Of Unemployed American Workers
As of March 2009, 12.5 million American workers were unemployed.

As of April 2009, more than 13 million workers were jobless, the unemployment rate in the U.S. had reached 8.5%, and that rate would have been 15.6%, if the workers who gave up looking for jobs or took part-time positions were included in the statistics.
